The Marketing Diagnostic: find what's working and what to fix first
It's a marketing audit for owner-operators, SMEs and growing businesses anywhere in NZ, run from our base in Christchurch, New Zealand. We call it the Marketing Diagnostic. We go through your website, search visibility, tracking, ads, reviews, competitors, social media and email, then give you a plain-English report and a 90-day plan, in order of what will make the most difference.
- Fixed scope.
- Paid upfront.
- No passwords needed.
Who the Diagnostic is for
It suits you if:
- You run the business and the marketing happens between other jobs.
- You have a website, a Google listing, and maybe some ads or social accounts, but you can't tell what's bringing in work.
- You have a marketing person or an agency, and you'd like an independent, plain-English second opinion on what's working.
- You're about to spend more on marketing and want to know where it will count first.
It may not be the right first step if you already know exactly what needs doing and just want it done. In that case, you can start with a project instead.
What we check
Your website
Whether it tells visitors clearly what you do and makes it easy to get in touch, on a phone as well as a computer. And whether your enquiry form actually reaches you.
Search visibility
How easily people find you on Google when they search for what you do, including your Google Business Profile (the listing that shows on Google Maps and in local results). This is the part people call SEO, or search engine optimisation.
Tracking
Whether you can see where your enquiries and sales come from. That usually means checking Google Analytics (GA4), Google's free tool for measuring website visits, and whether it's counting the things that matter to your business.
Ads
If you run Google ads or Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram), whether the spend can be measured and where the money is going.
Reviews
What customers see when they look you up: your reviews on Google and elsewhere, and how you're responding to them.
Competitors
How a few of your competitors show up online compared with you, so you can see where you stand and where the gaps are.
Social media
How your social media profiles look to someone checking you out, how active they are, and whether they bring people through to your business.
Whether you're using email marketing, and if you are, how your list, sign-up form and messages are set up.
What you get
- A plain-English report. What's working, what isn't, and why it matters to your business. Any technical terms are explained.
- A 90-day plan, in order of impact. A short list of what's worth doing first, not a long list of everything you could do.
- A walkthrough call. We take you through the findings and the plan on a call, so you can ask questions as we go. Afterwards, we email you the slide deck and a PDF to keep.
You can act on the plan yourself, hand it to your web person, or ask us to help.
How the Diagnostic works
-
1. Book a free chat
A free 15-minute chat about your business, what's worrying you and how we can help, including whether a Diagnostic is the right first step. If it isn't, we'll tell you.
-
2. We confirm the scope and fixed fee
If it's a fit, we send you the scope and a fixed fee in writing. The Diagnostic is paid upfront, before work starts, so you know the full cost from the beginning.
-
3. You give us access, not passwords
We send you simple steps to give us user access to the accounts we need to see, such as Google Analytics, Google Search Console or your ad account. You stay in control and can remove our access at any time.
-
4. We do the review
We go through each area properly and write up the findings. The review takes 3 working days once we have access to your accounts.
-
5. We walk you through your report and 90-day plan
We go through the report and plan with you on a call, so you can ask questions. After the call, we email you the slide deck and a PDF copy.
What happens after the Diagnostic
That's up to you. The Diagnostic stands on its own: you get the report and the plan, and whether you carry on with us is your call.
If you'd like help, we can fix what the Diagnostic finds, work alongside your web person, or stay on as your part-time marketing lead on a monthly retainer.
Questions owners ask about the Diagnostic
How much does the Diagnostic cost?
The Marketing Diagnostic starts from $1,500 + GST. It's a fixed fee, agreed in writing before any work starts and paid upfront. We confirm your fee after our chat, once we know what there is to look at.
Prices exclude GST. GST will be added if Button Marketing is GST-registered at the invoice date.
Do I need to give you my passwords?
No. We ask you to give us user access to the accounts we need to see, with only the access the job needs. You stay in control of your accounts and can remove our access at any time. Please don't send passwords or login codes.
How long does it take?
The review takes 3 working days once we have access to your accounts. Then we walk you through what we found on a call.
What happens on the free chat?
It's free and takes 15 minutes. We talk about your business, what you're already doing and what's worrying you, and how we can help. That includes an honest answer on whether a Diagnostic is the right first step. There's no pressure to go ahead.
Can you guarantee more leads or better Google rankings?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings or leads, because they depend on things no one fully controls, like changes at Google and what your competitors do. What we can give you is a clear picture of what's happening now and a plan, in order of impact, for what to do next.
Do you work with businesses outside Christchurch?
Yes. We work with owner-operators, SMEs and growing businesses anywhere in New Zealand. We're based in Christchurch, but you don't need to be. You give us access to your accounts online, and we walk you through the findings by video call. If you're in Christchurch, we can also meet in person.
